Anne Fitzgerald

Anne Fitzgerald is Cineplex Inc.'s Chief Legal Officer, overseeing legal, corporate affairs, governance and insurance matters for the company since January 2005.  Anne was brought into Cineplex for the primary purpose of managing the Famous Players acquisition, and simply never left the company.  She currently serves on the Executive Committee and is actively involved in the strategic planning for this dynamic and diverse company.  


Prior to joining Cineplex, she practiced law in both Canada and the US in areas of corporate, commercial, securities, criminal and entertainment law.   She started her practice in 1990 in a large commercial litigation firm, then switched to criminal prosecution in 1993.  She became an expert in multiple domestic homicide and child sex offense cases, participating in trial in multiple US states.  In addition to practicing law, Anne has also held the position of Associate Professor with Duke University teaching Leadership Studies using the New York City arts scene as the forum.  She also has produced theatre both in the US and in Canada, having been the creating producer of Evil Dead the Musical which has since been produced around the world.   Prior to going to law school, from the mid-1980s, Anne and some friends together owned and operated a college bar in Durham, North Carolina, which is tremendously successful today.  When she needed a break from the practice of law, Anne took a year off in 1993 to work with the Alaska State Parks to run a youth leadership development program in the wilderness of Alaska, mapping out hiking trails in previously undeveloped areas of the wilderness.  


Anne is currently is a member of the Board of Directors for each of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (serves on the Audit Committee and chairs the Governance Committee), the National Association of Theater Owners and the Movie Theatre Association of Canada (Vice Chair).  She also volunteers her time and expertise as a member of the Board of Directors of Outward Bound Canada (chair of the Fundraising Committee).


Anne was named the National Post/ZSA General Counsel of the Year in Mid-Market Excellence in 2014, having twice before been a finalist for the same award.  


Having led a number of expeditions for youth leadership development in remote parts of the world in addition to the one noted above in Alaska, Anne was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society in 2012.  


Anne holds an undergraduate degree in Public Policy Studies as well as a Juris Doctorate from Duke University. She attended the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government for leadership studies, where she received a certificate in leadership studies. She is currently licensed to practice law in Ontario and North Carolina and holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors managed by the University of Toronto Rotman School of Business.
